We are greatly saddened to report the passing of our colleague, Dr. Ghassan Shabaneh. Dr. Shabaneh had recently joined Al Jazeera Centre for Studies as a Senior Researcher in February 2015. Before joining Al Jazeera, Dr. Shabaneh was an Associate Professor of International and Middle East Studies at Marymount Manhattan College. Between 2003-2006, Dr. Shabaneh was a Mellon Fellow in Human Security at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. The Fellowship allowed him to travel Palestinian Refugee Camps and conduct extensive field research in Jordan, Syria, and the West Bank. In the last fifteen years, Dr. Shabaneh has lectured at Rutgers University of New Jersey, City College of New York, and Hunter College in New York. His research focuses on Arab Israeli Conflict, America and the Middle East, The United Nations, Human Rights, Nationalism, Democracy and Development, and Refugee Studies.
Dr. Shabaneh had published widely on Middle East Politics, with articles appearing in the Huffington Post, the Gulf Times, the Middle East Monitor, The Journal of Refugee Studies and New Political Science Journal. Dr. Shabaneh was often quoted on Middle East politics by researchers, newspapers, and media networks. He was also a frequent commentator on Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera English, Al Arabiya, Dubai TV, W-ABC, W-NBC, W-CBS, CBC, Worldfocus and many other media networks.
He received his Ph.D. from City University of New York-Graduate Center (CUNY-GC) in the Role of United Nations in State-Building: the Case of Palestine. He also holds an M.A. in Philosophy form CUNY-GC and an M.A. from Rutgers the State University of New Jersey in Public Policy and International Relations.
