On 18 January 2016, AlJazeera Centre for Studies released the results of its opinion poll, “Arab Elites’ Attitudes toward Iran and its Role in the Region” during a press conference in Doha.

The press conference highlighted what was considered a key finding from the opinion poll results: that most Arab elites rate the current state of Arab-Iranian political and security relations as quite negative, but that they hoped for better relations in the upcoming years in order to address some of the region’s struggles. For example, 89 per cent of the respondents rated current political ties between the two groups as “bad” or “very bad”, yet 69 per cent of the respondents support a cooperative regional security order between the Gulf states and Iran.

The opinion poll, considered the first to probe Arab elites’ attitudes toward Iran in this much detail, was conducted with 860 respondents representing 21 Arab nations from the period 30 September through 30 November 2015.

Respondents were asked about four key issue areas: Arab-Iranian relations now and in the future, Iran as a model of governance, Iran’s attitude towards Arab Spring revolutions and how Iran-US rapprochement would have an impact on the Arab world.
