Al Jazeera Centre for Studies is organising a webinar in collaboration with Al Jazeera Mubasher and the Centre for Mediterranean and International Studies (CEMI) in Tunisia under the title, "Tunisia’s New Constitution: A Solution or An Exacerbation?" The discussion is set to place on 15 August 2022 with the participation of a select group of Tunisian academics, researchers and politicians.

The webinar will forecast developments in the Tunisian political scene after the referendum on the constitution that took place on 25 July 2022, exacerbating the political crisis and diminishing the opportunities for dialogue that could lead to a compromise between President Kais Saied and his opponents.

Furthermore, the webinar will address questions regarding the features of the new republic that Saied seeks to establish and how the constitution will contribute to building it as well as the way the president may deal with opponents to his choices and the constitution that they do not recognise.

It will also look into the situation of the Tunisian opposition after the execution of the new constitution, its options for confronting it, and the challenges that will be imposed by the next stage as well as whether there will be opportunities for its unity or if it will remain active on various fronts.

Additionally, the webinar will dedicate a space for shedding light on the position of the Labour Union in the new scene and whether it will get involved in the opposition movement, participate in building the new republic, or resort to other options.

Moreover, the speakers will delve into and analyse the country’s economic and social conditions and their current and future political implications as well as whether the opposition can benefit from this aggravated and stressed situation.

Finally, the discussion will conclude with an attempt to explain the international position and its development towards what is transpiring in Tunisia since the start of the rule of “exceptional measures” a year ago and the limits of the impact of the international position (particularly that of Europe and the United States) in supporting the president's project or supporting the opposition, or in finding consensual solutions involving all parties.

The webinar will be broadcast on Al Jazeera Mubasher and live-streamed on the following social media platforms:
