Al Jazeera Centre for Studies co-convenes with Ibn Khaldun Center for Human and Social Sciences at Qatar University a conference entitled “National Pluralism in the Middle East: Towards a Common Civilizational Framework” on 26 March 2019. AJCS researchers will speak in the first panel, “Regional and International Powers’ Use of Middle East Nationalisms in the Modern Age”.

The panel will discuss the fraught relationship between the peoples in the Levant, how regional actors and world powers exploit Middle East nationalisms – namely Arabs, Turks, Persians and Kurds – politically and ideologically. It also examines the impact on the region’s security, stability, prosperity, and future.

The conference will probe into the role of local nationalism in terms of internal structure and interaction with other nationalisms in the region. It also addresses current attempts to manipulate each nationalism politically and ideologically, and define potential civilizational interconnection between the different nationalisms in the Middle East.

The speakers in AJCS’s panel will include Mahmoud Haddad, professor of history at the University of Balamand (Lebanon); Ramazan Erdag, associate professor of international relations at Eskisehir Osmangazi University (Turkey); Abdolreza Faraji-Rad, director general of the Strategic Foreign Relations Council and professor of geopolitical studies (Iran); and Abdulhakim Khasro, professor of political science at the University of Salahaddin and researcher at the Institute for Research and Development (Kurdistan).
