Al Jazeera Centre for Studies (AJCS) and the Forum for Arab and International Relations (FAIR), in collaboration with Al Jazeera Mubasher, are hosting a seminar “Two Waves of the Arab Spring: Lessons of the Past and Prospects of the Future.” A number of analysts from various Arab countries will gather at this event, which will take place at Al Jazeera Media Institute Auditorium in Doha, Tuesday, 19 November 2019, at 7:00 pm.
The panelists will examine the factors that have led to the so-called “second wave" of the 2011 Arab ‘Spring’– i.e. the vast popular movements seen in Sudan, Algeria, Iraq and Lebanon – and probe into whether there are resemblances/transformations between the protest modalities and how bottom-up versus top-down politics have played out, so far, in a complex cycle of Arab transitions between 2011 and 2019.
The seminar participants will discuss whether the popular movements of the Second Wave have learned from the experiences of the First Wave. They will address the positions of the political regimes in those turbulent countries, amidst the deepening securitization of most Arab societies. The seminar will conclude with a panel on the Second Wave’s prospects achieving what the First Wave could not deliver.
