Al Jazeera Centre for Studies, in collaboration with the Arab Thought Forum in Amman, is hosting a seminar titled “The Sudanese Crisis amid the Ongoing War and Absence of Solutions” on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, in Doha, Qatar. This event comes amid escalating conflict in Sudan and the complexities of its political and military landscape since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.
The seminar will focus on recent developments in Sudan, examining shifts in the balance of power and their impact on political and civil trajectories.
It will also address the humanitarian challenges faced by millions of displaced people and refugees, as ongoing fighting disrupts access to essential aid, raising fears of famine that could affect around 25 million people.
Additionally, the seminar will explore the war's impact on cross-border trade, which has plummeted by up to 90% with some neighbouring countries, resulting in severe economic crises, particularly in South Sudan and Chad, both of which heavily depend on Sudan for their trade.
The seminar aims to assess the evolving military and political landscape, raising questions about whether regional states and international actors can provide reliable guarantees to both sides of the conflict and help establish the necessary security arrangements for a lasting ceasefire. It will also examine the war's implications for neighbouring African countries, particularly as accusations arise between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces regarding the involvement of armed groups from adjacent states.
The seminar will be broadcast live on Al Jazeera Mubasher and live-streamed on AJCS’s digital platforms.
