On 2 August 2012, Al Jazeera Center for Studies hosted a round table entitled “The Syrian Revolution and the Claims of a Falling Regime.” Invited guest speakers included Dr. Ghassan Shabaneh, Associate Professor of Middle East and International Studies at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, and Dr. Fayez Mohammed, a military and strategic research expert from the Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, Jordan, both of whom were on research visits to Doha.

The discussion focused on possible consequences of a potential downfall of the Assad regime and the impacts of a sectarian war. Syria’s geographical position was analysed in relation to the risks to its neighbours and the immediate region which might follow the fall of the regime.
