The AlJazeera Center for Studies hosted Islamic scholar and General People’s Congress Party Secretary General Dr. Hassan Al-Turabi in its headquarters in Doha last Thursday, 3 April 2014. The discussion revolved around the characteristics of the Sudanese scene in light of the challenges facing this country with the escalation of violence in Darfur and armed conflict in many other areas.
Al-Turabi also mentioned his party’s position on the national dialogue sessions called for by President Omar Al-Bashir, in addition to what results may be expected of them and the guarantees required for the application of their outputs. Al-Turabi expressed his opinion regarding the current opinions on the chances of the establishment of closer relations between the General People’s Congress and the National Congress parties in the coming phase, especially with the approach of the presidential elections, which are to be held next year.
Al-Turabi concluded his visit with a discussion of the truth of the Arab revolutions and the state of the democratization process in a number of Arab countries, especially in light of the obstacles and domestic and external challenges they face and how they could be managed to achieve peoples’ rights to freedom, democracy, and stability.
