Analysis of the positions of US Republican or Democratic presidential candidates is not merely a study of the biography of the candidate and his or her expected positions and policies. Rather, it is an attempt to determine the status of the party on the eve of the presidential election and the reasons behind the selection of a particular candidate and its implications on the future of the party and orientations in general.
